Obituary of William J. Grattan

Colonie – William J. Grattan, 71, passed away peacefully on Thursday November 8th at Samaritan Hospital with his loving family by his side. Born in Troy, he is the son of the late William and Marie (Ryan) Grattan.

Bill proudly served our country in The United States Army during the Vietnam War. After the war, he returned to the States and was employed by the Watervliet Arsenal before beginning his 34 year career with the United States Postal Service, retiring in 2013. Bill was an avid horseracing fan and owner, he was a part owner of Invading Humor, a colt who went on to earn more than $500,000 during his career. He was also a music lover and travelled all over the capital district to see his favorite artists. Bill was a member of the Watervliet VFW #729. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family and loved to watch his nieces, nephews and friends children compete in all of their sporting events. Bill’s generosity to his friends and family knew no bounds and he will truly be missed by all who knew him.

Bill is survived by his brother, Dennis M. Grattan; cousin, Cindy (John) Barkowski who was like a sister to him and his former sister-in-law, Audrey Zraket. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. In addition to his parents, William was predeceased by his brother, John G. Grattan.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to the Nurses, Doctors and staff of the Emergency Room, Third Floor and Fourth Floor for the kind and compassionate care given to Bill throughout his illness.

Funeral services for Bill will be held on Friday December 7th at 11:30 a.m. at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road Schuylerville, NY 12871, where he will be laid to rest with full military honors. Relatives and friends are encouraged to gather at the cemetery entrance 30 minutes prior to the service. Following the services family and friends will gather at the Watervliet VFW #729, 783 Broadway Watervliet, where they will continue to celebrate Bill’s life.
